My Students

Have you ever had to read a book that you just don't get, or better yet can't read? Have you ever been so far behind in your literacy that it just doesn't seem like you can catch up? My students have gone through this since starting school, and now we are working together to change that.

My students are the first 5th grade class in our new turn around school.

The school they attend was rated one of the worst in our city last year. They are funny, honest, caring, and starting to be hardworkers, but have not have a good experience with school in the past, and need time to adjust. They are realizing that we are here to help them grow, but they have to do some work too, and we are going to hold them accountable. We want our school to continue to be a happy and safe place for these students, and we want them to feel comfortable in working towards their goal of growing 6 reading levels this year.

My Project

Creating a leveled library with lower level books will allow my students to have a number of texts to read during reading comprehension. These books are known as their "Just Right" books, the books they need in order to help them with their goal of increasing their reading levels. While I work with a group of students during Guided Reading the rest of the class will be able to read independently on their level and practice various reading objectives. They will work with their texts in stopping to check what was read through summary, tune into interesting words, write about how a character changes throughout a text, create a list of facts learned from non-fiction pieces, and much much more. The bins will allow me to organize the books based on their letter levels. Students then know that they are the bins to get their books from. The mailboxes allow me to communicate individually with each student on what task I would like them to complete on their level, in their book.

Please support this project of increasing our classroom library.

I want my students to love reading and they can't learn to do that with books that aren't on their level. In order to try and catch up their skills they need to work on their level first. They have the passion, I have the ability to teach them, now I just need more resources to make it all happen. Please help us.
