This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My school is a Title I school where 100% of the students receive free breakfast and lunch. I teach third-fifth graders in a community with a high percentage of military and other hard working families. This makes for a very diverse group of special learners!
New books equal new opportunities to read.
The students are so hardworking and look forward to coming to school every day!
My Project
Having new books to read engages students in so many ways. Because students have multiple ways that they learn mathematical concepts, With sets of math based literature I can create activities that will engage these mathematicians in learning. It's hard to keep everyone engaged when you only have 1 copy of a text to implement in a math station or small group instruction. Reading math text that is rich with ideas that support fractions, geometry, graphing, multiplication and division really helps our boys and girls.
The more variety I can offer students in the ways they show what they have learned , the greater likelihood of reaching more students.
Using math literature in small groups and math centers can give students the boost that's needed after missing a great deal of math teaching due to the pandemic.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
