This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

The wide variety of graphic novels will help engage readers of all levels, especially those who are adverse to reading or who have been told in the past (by outside influences and then internalized) that they will never read at grade level. Graphic novels are a great way to entice young readers and to get them interested in becoming life-long readers and learners. Spanish language titles will open up our classroom library to new-comer students and emerging bilinguals who have far more limited options of books from which to choose. Having a large variety of Spanish language books will create an inclusive environment while promoting reading. Studies have shown that reading in any language promotes a more rapid mastery of academic concepts and fosters the transition to fluent bilingualism more seamlessly. Lastly, the horror and suspense titles are by far the most popular choice amongst my high school readers. Theses books were hand-picked by students who are starving to find books interesting. The biggest obstacle that I have observed to getting kids to read is their lack of interest in a book's subject. When we provide options that are captivating, they are more likely to read, thereby increasing their literacy and their connection to the written word. I am hoping that your help will in turn create life-long readers because reading can become addictive when students want to read!
