My Students

By 5th grade many students have decided that reading isn't "fun". Many times this is because they just haven't met the right book to spark their imagination!

I teach in a small public school in Maryland.

Our population is just around 300 students. My students are very enthusiastic except when it comes to reading on their own...especially the boys. Most of the reading embedded in the curriculum is historical fiction or expository writing which often turns off even the most avid readers. I have found some titles that truly capture their interest and work these in through literature circles. Unfortunately, because of the size of our school, funding is often an issue even with the efforts of our very generous PTA. They fund many projects but can't fund all requests.

My Project

By purchasing these books, my students will have a chance to read and discuss high interest literature. Students will be able to create discussion groups and learn about the author's writing style. By using series books, students have a continuity of characters and can draw on previous books to help them piece things together. We have a class blog about the books where students can pose questions as they are reading! It's a great way to take reading to that "next level" and instill a love of reading.

As a teacher, I am always thrilled when my students come in each morning and want to talk about books.

I have students checking the Internet to find out what other books have been written by certain authors or when the next in the series will be coming out. Inspiring students to enjoy reading is the first step to becoming a life long learner.
