Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

In September, I will begin my fifth year of teaching at an elementary school in the Highbridge section of the Bronx. I enjoy facilitating the learning of this population of children who are most times, overlooked, undervalued and underestimated! It is challenging, exciting and very worthwhile. Early last year, I noticed that approximately one third of the 19 boys in my class were just not that keen on reading. Numerous studies have shown that many boys come to reading later than girls. Many schools fail to supply "other" reading material that will capture this group of learners. This attitude only serves to hinder academic development. Children are always fascinated to find out they know something that they had no idea they knew. That was the case this past year when I introduced my students to some very common literary devices: alliteration, assonance, rhyme and personification. One evening while having dinner with a friend and her seven-year-old daughter, I was introduced to Captain Underpants! To my shock and wonderful surprise, the story had a plot, challenging vocabulary, was amusing, without being too silly and was full of these very literary devices. I soon realized that these books were familiar to some of my boys, however, most could not afford them and our school does not have a real library. I purchased five books in the series. I made the wall space around and behind my desk print rich with poems, excerpts from short stories, magazine articles, novels, etc., all having one or more examples of the literary devices or ‘tricks' as my kids would say! By October, my boys -- most especially, those who showed little interest -- had devoured these books! In November, I started a special library. I purchased some classics for children: Frankenstein, The Three Musketeers, Kidnapped, The Time Machine, etc. My students knew that they had access to this library, (on my desk) after carefully completing whatever task was at hand for a particular lesson. They also knew that I would only accept their best. This worked without fail to get my non-readers up and reading! Not all of the kids wanted the classics. I decided to add something to my library, something fun and challenging - comic books. After searching the neighborhood, I found Adam's Comics and Cards! This was another way to keep my boys interested and reading. This was also a way to introduce my girls to some lively and interesting science fiction writing in which women played prominent and positive roles. It was a fabulous and fun year of reading for my boys and girls! I am confident that this year will be even better. The cost of books is [price], including shipping and [fulfillment].
