My Students

Teaching 3rd grade coming out of a pandemic school year has its unique set of challenges for students, teachers, parents and schools. In my 3rd grade class, we have a range of students learning different skills ranging from grades k - 3. Some students are working on decoding words with digraphs and long vowels, while other students are building comprehension skills about characters and authors purpose. One thing that has made this year powerful are my students eagerness to learn and take risk. They understand that everyone is on different levels of learning and it is amazing to watch them celebrate each other’s wins and encourage each other by “sending them some shine”. Often during lessons, when someone is having difficulty answering a question, a student would say “You got this!”. Supportive, encouraging and eager to learn; my students do a grate job of reminding me that it’s ok to be frustrated when challenges arise, it’s not ok to never try at all.

My Project

These books would help widen my students vocabulary and experiences. My students enjoy learning and reading in general, but I notice a spark within them when we learn about black characters like Bill Pickett, who is one of most famous black cowboys. When we learned about the Chinese culture that lead to the Legend of Mulan, there were mini activist being born saying things like “That’s not fair. Why would they treat her like that, just because she’s a girl”. These additions to our library will help build experiences for my students about different cultures while also getting them excited about the places they can go with just reading stories.
