This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach first grade in a large, urban school district.

My class is filled with very energetic 6 and 7 year olds!

Our classroom consists of students of varied academic levels. More than half of my students are from low‑income households. All receive free lunch. Their home lives are just as varied as they are.

Despite their differences, they all have one thing in common. They are each very special children. They each bring their special uniqueness to my classroom. Our classroom is a very busy and exciting place!

My Project

Having fun ways to learn and practice decoding words will have a big impact on furthering their reading skills. I am requesting Little Readers and 3- and 4- letter word building puzzles to help them become more fluent readers. My students will use the dry erase pockets and markers to practice decoding, reading, and writing sight words.

This is the first year my students will have a complete year of in-person learning due to the pandemic.

Most of my students are in the beginning stages of learning to read. Trying to learn to read virtually was not ideal. My students need manipulatives to learn and practice different decoding rules and strategies that can help enhance their reading skills. The magnetic writing page and word building blocks will help us to extend and reinforce these strategies that will help them to become better readers and writers.
