My Students

My students are hungry, not only for the food in the cafeteria, but also for the lessons in their books. Brown Girl Dreaming is the perfect class read as it is inspirational, relatable and beautifully written. More than that, the book helps support both our poetry unit AND our social studies unit!

We are an amazing class of diverse students and learners.

We are an urban school in Brooklyn and we are determined to be our best despite financial limitations. We are a creative and always growing group of students and professionals, determined to make the best of what we have and create with whatever we have around us.

My Project

Using Brown Girl Dreaming as a class read aloud will help us reinforce for our students our method of close reading that will set the stage for deeper and more meaningful reading experiences throughout their schooling. Reading a book with peers is a way to help strong readers think more deeply and help weaker readers push themselves with a built in scaffold.

There is nothing more important than being an active reader.

We need to be fully engaged in what we read and discriminating in what we believe. Teaching children to be the most active and involved readers possible serves them for a lifetime.
