My Students

The best gift you can give a young person is that of great stories. There is a Dr. Seuss quote that I love that says “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.” I want to have as many books as possible at my students' disposal.

I meet 150 new freshmen geography students each year in an urban South Carolina school in a high-poverty district.

Many students grow up in a culture where reading is not embraced, encouraged, or integrated into daily life. Sometimes the classroom is the only place that students have exposure to books that they might actually like to read. My students often tell me throughout the year books they like, books they've heard of, and books they're looking to read and ask if I have them. I try to keep a running tally of things I heard them talk about so I can add them to my shelves. These are books that I hope will spark a life-long love of learning in all of my students regardless of learning abilities and levels.

My Project

How many ways can I describe how essential having access to books is to a quality life? Reading is not just being able to call words out on a page, but actually being able to comprehend and appreciate what is written. Part of the reasons young people don't read is they've never learned that there are books out there for all interests in all fields. If I receive these books, I will be able to put more books in their hands that will open up new worlds to them. The more books they have, the more they will realize that there are reasons to read that go beyond "I was told to" or "I have to for class." I like to implement self-selected reading in class for about 15 minutes a day. Many students don't even have their own books to bring. If I have full bookshelves, there will be a wealth of options to entice them to pick something up and get into reading.

As much as I would love to be able to provide my students with every great book I run across, I simply cannot.

Especially in these tough times when state & district funding isn't as readily available as in the past, teachers have to rely on outside help providing accessible materials to students. Books are timeless classroom additions. I hope that you will be moved to provide students with the life-long gift of reading by donating to this project and providing my students with new books!
