Help Mrs. Webb

Teaching 8th grade Reading in the inner city is a challenge. My 75 students come to school looking for a safe environment in which to learn and grow. Some students get all their meals at school: breakfast, lunch, and dinner. When surviving the streets is your priority, reading seems like a useless and uninteresting task.

Having sparked the interest in Reading with Graphic Novels I don't want to lose momentum. My students have seen their analytical skills, comprehension skills and numerous other skills improve by reading. They discovered that there is more than just text books to read and there is a genre of books out there for everyone. I need to take the next step and use these Graphic Novels to teach the elements of a story such as plot structure and character analysis. I can use Graphic Novels with small group instruction analyzing the elements of a story and make the transition of literature analysis with more complex texts less painful.

Adding more Graphic Novels to our classroom collection will keep the "Reading Rolling". Reading can now take on a new analytical task. By examining the specific elements of a story using Graphic Novels as the example identifying plot, character, theme, conflict and so on will not be as difficult with the required text.

Please help me keep these "at risk" students seeing not only the importance of reading but also the joy of reading and enhance skills my students thought they did not have.
