My Students

My 6th grade Social Studies students all have special needs. Throughout my 5 classes and 60 students are a variety of disabilities and abilities. The one common denominator among my students is their struggle with literacy.

I am hoping to build a classroom library of differentiated texts on Ancient History to allow students to build their literacy and fluency skills while deepening their understanding of classroom concepts.

Some of my students fear reading because they cannot read on grade level and others of my students hate reading because they are never interested in the topic.

Being able to have students pick books that interest them while still relating to the curriculum will help build the skills they need to succeed across every class throughout middle school and into high school.

My Project

These books will enhance the reading-positive classroom that I strive to create. My classroom library will be a place that my students really enjoy! Each book selected appeals to a different kind of reader to ensure all of my students are being reached. All of these books have been chosen with my students in mind. Students will be able to choose their own books and take them home- which will help them continue to enjoy independent reading time.

With these new books, my students will be able to choose from various topics and styles, allowing them to enjoy reading independently at their own grade level.

The best way to increase reading ability is to read more, and these books will continue to help my students grow stronger in reading. Right now my students hate reading, but they love the freedom to choose. Help me change their minds about reading and create a love of literacy.
