My school is located on a US Air Force Base that is a joint service command which creates a unique multi-service community. Many of my students and staff are from military families, many of whom have parents deployed throughout the world. The staff of teachers and administration is proud to serve these children.
Building relationships with these students and their families is a large part of day-to-day life at my school.
These children have to move every two to three years, so they are constantly starting over with friends, teachers, and communities.
Over the last seven years, our school expanded to provide education for grades K-8 to better accommodate the needs of our children and their families. Our school has limited funding for the expansion and supplies for our classrooms.
My Project
Who doesn't love a good coffee lounge? The coziness of the room. The different size furniture to choose for seating. Digital or paperback books to read. Sometimes a snack or warm drink. I want my classroom to have that same feel so that my students will love coming to reading class.
I teach middle grades reading on a military base where the kids in the school range from K-8, and my room is located in the elementary wing.
My big kids (middle school) have a wonderful area in the room to relax and get lost in a book (or two) and have an enjoyable reading experience. The last few years, middle grades were given a set of our Sunshine State Standards "SLAM" books that my students would read independently and create amazing projects when finished. These projects are part of a county reading competition. However, we did not receive copies this year for our classroom but through DonorsChoose, we were able to get a set earlier this year. My kids are devouring these books, and I cannot keep a copy in my room! We need another set to fulfill my kids reading needs.
More book choices would enhance their reading environment, help establish student relationships with peers, and foster a love for reading.
