Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach some of the most innovative, inspiring, intelligent, driven, entrepreneurial young people in the city. My students are eager to learn and engage in conversations which have left adults, including our superintendent, quite speechless. During class, my students lead and manage the conversation on most days. And it isn't just my twelfth graders! My tenth graders are equally capable of doing this pretty intricate dance of monitoring the speaker, allowing for wait time, and inviting new voices into the conversation.

I am elated to walk into my school building, walk into my classroom every day, and teaching remotely has been challenging since both I and my students enjoy and prefer the classroom which we have collectively made into a safe space where everyone gets to cultivate their voice, share their ideas, and learn from one another.

We look forward to walking back into our safe space, but until then, we need some much needed support, and so here we are!

My Project

My students always keep me on my toes. They bring up topics they are interested in learning more about by having conversations with their peers. In order to help support their curiosity and give them the language to use during these discussions, I have curated a list of books which I find helpful in continuing my students' education on these topics.

The list I have put together includes nonfiction books on topics like sexual health, which I often find is taught using outdated resources.

I have also included books of poetry, and essays, and works of fiction including a play, all of which touch on subjects like gender and race. All of the books I have chosen are by BIPOC authors who speak directly to today's youth.

With these selections, I hope to continue to inspire my students to have the types of open and honest conversations we usually have where they can apply the language these authors provide them with, and encourage them to consent to question their ever changing circumstances and the world in these conversations.
