My Project

Reading is one of the most effective ways for students to build vocabulary and learn to communicate in a new language. However, one of the challenges of teaching high school students to read a new language is finding level-appropriate material, and on topics that appeal to teenagers. Enter leveled readers! These books are written with a lot of cognates (words that are very similar in English and Spanish) and simple sentence constructions that novices can easily follow. Last year my Spanish 1 and 2 students were very successful with leveled readers and I'm hoping to add class sets of these three entertaining novels to my library to take this year's classes even further!

In Spanish 1 students will be reading "Soy Carlos," a great way to dive into all the concepts they'll be learning this year.

Students will learn how to introduce themselves, how to talk about their likes/dislikes, how to describe themselves, how to talk about how they're feeling, and more. The simple but adorable stick figure illustrations further support their understanding. Spanish 1 will also be reading "El Capibara con Botas," which I'm fortunate to already have in my library. (Huge thanks to the generous donors from last year!)

My Spanish 2 students will be reading "Tumba," which explores the cultural traditions of Day of the Dead through the eyes of a young Mexican boy named Alex. In Spanish 2 we'll also be reading Clase de Confesiones, a humorous tale about miscommunication in a high school Spanish class that's perfect for my second-year Spanish learners. I'm super-excited to get these books into the hands of my students and watch their love of reading grow!
