Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Many of my students openly admit to not reading outside of school. As teachers, we know that fluency is key to comprehension. My students need as many opportunities to read as possible during the day, so that they can increase their rate of reading and be successful in all subject areas.

My students work hard every day.

They each have unique challenges that they have to overcome to be successful. Our school is a high poverty, Title I school. More than half of my students come from homes where a language other than English is spoken. The parents of my students work long hours to provide basic necessities and I often find myself buying materials for my classroom for day to day learning. As learners, they have come to rely on teachers to fill in the gaps and will wait for someone to "rescue" them when they get stuck. I would like to provide my students with additional resources of information for topics we study in math and science so they can become more independent, problem solvers.

My Project

My student struggle with vocabulary. For most of them their exposure to new words only happens at school. The are encouraged to use them and take ownership of them, but the shear number of words is overwhelming. Giving them access to books that teach content, but in a different way then textbooks will help to engage them and help reinforce new vocabulary. Students will be able to read the books during independent reading. They will also serve as a resource for review and vocabulary practice when students create vocabulary posters. The math books will also serve as learning station activities so students can practice math concepts while they read the stories.

The more ways that students are given to read, the more likely they are to become engaged.

I don't often see my students reading nonfiction, but I hope that having these graphic novels and picture books will help to change their minds about choosing nonfiction books to read independently. Instilling the love of reading will help students to be successful not only in reading, but in all subject areas.
