Help Ms. Stork

Sustained Silent Reading has become a major issue at the school in which I teach. After four years on the Academic Distress List, we have tried a variety of strategies to raise our test scores. Regardless of the content area, we saw time and time again that our students just didn't have the reading levels or vocabulary to be considered on a level playing field with their peers across the state. After much research, faculty debates, and soul-searching, my school has implemented 30 minutes of required reading every day in our quest to increase student learning and retention.

Requiring several hundred students to read daily has not been without struggle. Implementing this has required restructuring our school day, obtaining thousands of additional books, and convincing the students that this is a valid program.

As a school, we have received approximately 2,400 new and used books in the past 4 months. We have also successfully had students engaged in reading and take an interest in the novels. The major problem my students are now facing is getting comfortable and relaxing for 30 minutes while they are reading. As most Americans know, the typical school desk is not a place you'd want to sit for extended periods of time. Our wood desks are just not conducive to sitting back, relaxing, and enjoying a good book. My hope is to create a reading nook with 9 bean bag chairs. I have put up curtains, spread out carpet remnants, and created a welcoming environment for the students. The remaining piece is to have comfortable chairs for the students to enjoy.

Your donation will complete my classroom's reading nook. This last step will be the final piece in helping to raise my students' reading levels, vocabularies, and ultimately their test scores. Please help my students to raise their chances of loving literature, thus improving their prospects of graduating high school and attending college in the future.
