My Students

I teach English learner students in grades K-5 at an elementary school on the Big Island in Hawaii. My students represent many different cultures and economic backgrounds. Most of my students are "disadvantaged" due to their economic backgrounds.

Although my students may be facing challenges in their lives, they are always eager to learn new things.

Our school has been using a state-mandated reading and math curriculum. Many of our students are struggling, especially with the reading curriculum. Our students experience difficulty relating to the stories shared in the reading curriculum because of their limited exposure to different climates and cultures. Many of our students have never left the Hawaiian islands; therefore, their personal experiences are minimal.

My Project

My students will be using an individualized, multimodal language and literacy software program designed to help English learners master essential reading and speaking skills. The goal is to have each student use the program for 20 minutes each school day or a total of 100 minutes each week.

I'd like to reward students each week for meeting or exceeding their reading goals.

The pop it toys and squishy toys will be added to our student incentive collection. Students will be able to choose a toy as a reward for meeting their reading goals. The plastic bins will be used to store the various incentives and the teacher pay teacher gift card will be used to purchase ready made lessons in reading and writing for grades K-5. I'm hoping that the incentive program will encourage students to meet their weekly goals.
