Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are mostly from a very low socio-economic area of our city. They are predominantly Hispanic, although there are other ethnicities represented as well. My class is a wonderful mix of street-smart and tender, brash and empathetic, and tough yet vulnerable. Life has not been kind to many of them, yet they show kindness to one another. Life is difficult, but they are chin-up, shoulders-back ready to meet any challenge. These kids are engaged and engaging. I love them!
My Project
Richard Peck's novel for young readers, On the Wings of Heroes, brings to life America in World War II. I will use this novel to integrate an important part of our country's history with English Language Arts during our leveled reading block, which occurs 4 days per week.
Lesson plans will include engaging discussions, reading, vocabulary activities, and a culminating project that will consist of a timeline and a "one-pager", which is an anchor chart created by students in groups to portray in words and pictures what they have learned throughout the unit.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
