I work in a high poverty district; our particular school site is at one hundred percent free and reduced lunch. I see students who come to school daily and have faced challenges just to be here. In spite of these daily challenges and stressors, my kids come to the classroom everyday ready and excited to learn! I want to create a space that is warm, welcoming, and full of resources to aid in their learning experience.
I am looking for ways to capture the excitement and joy of learning for my students.
Many of these children are raised in single family homes by either a parent or another family member. Things that many children take for granted, including print rich materials (books, magazines, encyclopedias) are not within reach. I want resources otherwise limited or unavailable to my students at home to be accessible when they come to school.
When my kids enter my classroom, however, I see the potential they possess and I feel it is my job while I have them to expose them to as much as I can. I want learning to be an adventure for them daily that they enjoy undertaking.
My Project
I have been teaching for almost ten years and I am entering my first year teaching second grade! As I enter this new chapter, I am so excited to bring with me as many age appropriate print resources as I can. I want my classroom to be print rich in both fiction and non fiction texts. Our curriculum is built so much on language arts and reading-- I want my students to be able to find a title that piques their interests and makes them want to read more. I would like to be able to build a vast range of reading levels and topics within my library, as I know that the spectrum of readers will vary from those with very little ability, to those who are reading well past grade level.
The area where I teach is stricken with generational poverty and many of my students do not have access to books at home.
I would like for them to be able to come to class and there be no shortage of titles to choose from. I want our class library to be full, colorful, and bright. I am going to continue to teach my students proper handling of books so we can preserve them for future classes.
These books will also provide my students with access to more vocabulary, which is key to building reading skills. I will be able to build my library of books to read to them as well so that I can help build their skills in reading. I am an avid reader and I am looking forward to building my classroom library to foster my love of reading on to my students!!
