Reading for the Future Through the Portals of Life
Help me give my students the experiences of reading about other teenage behavior, to realize through reading that they are not the only people to experience trauma, death, or bullying.
Reading For The Future is a class whereby students of all varying degrees struggle with reading, comprehension and connectivity. I try to bring stories that my students of all grades, ethnicities, outlooks and perceptions can dive into with me and develop a stronger open-minded outlook on life, strenghening their reading skills in the process.
These students of mine tend to be from different grades, ethnicities, socio-economic levels, and with obvious learning issues in reading.
I connect the first day on a personal level, and from that point on, we are "swimming with the fishes", allowing every single student to understand how worthy they are in this world, in my classroom. Every single one of my students comes to realize that reading, at any level, with any piece of literature, is important. I do not judge them on what they like to read be it graphic novel, comic book, fiction, nonfiction, or any genre. I do not judge them on their level of reading and encourage these students to even reread something that was read to and by them in the past. This concretes vocabulary and comprehension as well as erecting a foundation to move on to other genres and levels.
These specific texts that I have chosen, are embraced. There is no fear, no anxiety, but rather we read together. I read, we discuss, we integrate, and we deconstruct together. By the end of the semester, my students come to realize that I accept them for what they are, and they do become stronger; in their reading and vocabulary and as people developing into solid, healthy community citizens. No matter what, my students know, from day one, that I care, I love them and want them to grow and succeed.
