Many students in my classroom are struggling readers or have a small desire to read. Children need books that are engaging and mysterious to get them more involved and excited to read. In my classroom, I have been using a lot of stories and texts to appeal to my students through out the year.
My student population is extremely diverse.
I have students who are not from the US, students with disabilities, gifted students, and students from all types of cultures. Many of these students struggle with reading and need practice, but we have few books that engage them. If given the right book, these students can grow and become better readers.
My Project
My students need books that they actually want to read. "The Westing Game" is a high engagement text that is also the correct Lexile level for my students. The students will use these books to read, complete activities to help grammar and comprehension, and also complete projects. I hope to be able to have students working in novel study groups with self guided reading and learning. I want my students to be self directed and also able to work successfully with group members to complete the novel and any extra activities to boost learning.
Many of my students have never been given a brand new book.
The economic status of my school is around three quarters Free and Reduced Meals Students. Many of my students would be excited just to have a new book that wasn't used for years. Also, this book will bring excitement and engagement to the world of reading for my students that they desperately need! I believe this book could help my students find the love and joy of reading that I hope to share with them.
