Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The faces of the New York City classroom consists of students from Bangladesh, Yemen, Iran, Dominican Republic, Mexico and many other places to say the least. This is what my two classes of 6th graders looks like. They have come to America for quality education and to escape unspeakable violence in some of there countries . Many of them speak very little English but are eager to learn. A new student that was admitted into my classroom two weeks ago speaks no English, I used a translation app and asked him what he hoped to achieve in school he simply said; "I want to be smart and successful in America." That statement helped me even further to help teach my ENL students. The challenges that I face is communicating in a classroom that speaks various languages and I speak only English. The photo is student created and won 3rd prize for respect for all. I've grown as an educator because of these students. It's wonderful watching them progress in a country that offers them something more than their native home countries.

My Project

With any student, captivating them enough to put down their technology and pick up a book is worse than taking a trip to the dentist. After asking students who speak some English what they like to read, many of them wanted action, sports, entertainment to name a few. This literacy book project gives my students a little bit of what they want, yet it opens them up to reading about survival and not giving up, work hard to achieve in a world that is not always kind to those that are different from themselves. I've carefully selected books that will inspire them to go beyond their present circumstances and see a brighter future. Although they are emerging English Language Learners, these books will benefit all students that enter my classroom. The purpose of having these various genres of books is to help students develop the love of reading. There is a pilot program that is beginning in September within the MS 210Q environment. Students will be given a period each week to connect to a particular book of their choice. The problem within my classroom is the lack of books that engage my students to pick up a book and read.
