My Project

I am a special education teacher in a Title I, self-contained (District 75) elementary school located in New York City. I currently teach a 1st - 2nd grade class made up of students diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder and other various learning disabilities. Students in my classroom have poor fine and gross motor skills and limited language. They are all visual, kinesthetic learners and require hands-on materials to aid them in reaching their individual goals! By varying the approaches to learning based on each student’s needs, there is greater opportunity for every student to learn and grow.

My students require a learning environment and materials that will engage, excite and interest them as well as opportunities to practice, enrich, and enhance their learning.

The materials requested in this project will enhance our current library space, making it an enticing place for students and giving them a cozy spot to learn and read. The tent will provide them a space they feel safe and privacy to read in. The books requested are on my students current and future reading levels and will provide them an opportunity for text they are able to read and comprehend. This project will help to provide my current, as well as future students with an abundance of opportunities and supports to achieve reading success by providing them with books on their individual reading levels. The easels and doll stands will allow us to display books as well as student art work making the space bright and welcoming for all. My students LOVE to display their work! The CVC game will help to expand my students vocabulary and word recognition!
