Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students in the South Bronx are full of energy, enthusiasm, ambition, motivation and full to the brim with joie de vivre! We have students of all capabilities, strengths, cultures, languages. It's a diverse bunch, with a lot of different personalities but a commonality they share is a hunger for knowledge, world experiences and reading.

Using literature, our students can escape into many worlds, far from their typical South Bronx lives, if only for a moment each week.

Having time to build further community spirit within our school, while educating and widening their reading prowess, will enable these students to have a safe space, a place to share, creativity to flow and most of all, reading independently which is the tenet of our schools mission.

My Project

This book is the type of book I wish I had read while I was in high school. Trying to keep 25 students engaged, motivated and productive while learning is not for the faint of heart. Having an engaging book for the class will hopefully pique their interest in reading other books and literature for school. Watching students being able to find themes, literacy strategies, being encouraged to read independently and have academic conversations about books and literature is a joy to be a part of and a joy to create.

Using a book set like this in the school will ensure other classes will benefit and enjoy for years to come.

By using a book like this, a lot of our students can relate to the setting, theme and message in the book. Using strategies to help the students reach their full reading potential is paramount to seeing success for our students.
