My Project

My children need picture books that are thoughtfully designed to support early childhood development and foster a love of reading. The books I have selected for this project feature simple language that is easy for young minds to process and comprehend. The text often includes repetitive phrases, which helps children anticipate what comes next, building their confidence as readers. The bright, colorful illustrations are a crucial element, as they visually depict the story and keep little ones engaged. Familiar themes like friendship, family, and everyday experiences allow children to connect the stories to their own lives.

Developing foundational literacy skills is critical for young children to build a strong base for future reading success.

I want to create a reading center when my students can develop print awareness that involves understanding the basic conventions of print, such as knowing that text is read from left to right and top to bottom on a page. Letter recognition means being able to identify and name the letters of the alphabet. Phonemic awareness is the ability to hear, identify, and manipulate the individual sounds in spoken words. Building vocabulary in the early years exposes children to a wide range of words, which is key for language development and reading comprehension. Finally, basic comprehension skills enable young readers to understand and make meaning from text.

My students show a genuine passion and eagerness for learning to read, demonstrating a love for books and a natural curiosity to explore the written word. Despite coming from low-income families in an economically disadvantaged rural area, these children hunger for the opportunity to immerse themselves in reading. Sadly, their parents often lack the financial means to purchase books for their kids to read at home. Recognizing this need, I have strived to create a welcoming and well-stocked reading center right inside our classroom.
