Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am currently teaching 3rd grade. Last year, I taught 2nd grade. The year before that, I taught 1st grade. Although I haven't had the same exact students each year, I've had a mix of this approximately 65 student cohort over the past 3 years. I always really love my students but this is group is extra special to me.

We were together through a full year of remote learning, we were together relearning how to be in-person students and teachers, and now we are together again (for the last time because I am not going to 4th grade) and I want to make this the best school year they've had yet; academically, socially, and emotionally.

One way I can do this is by making our classroom as comfortable. and as aesthetically pleasing as possible. Our school building is 100 years old and there is only so much one can do to hide it. (But a rug can hide 54 square feet of it!) Our school provides rugs for grades K - 2, but I'd like a rug in my classroom, too. In addition to making the room more inviting, I'd like a rug because it is my goal is to help students increase their reading level by at least one and a half grades. To do this, the kids need to love reading for pleasure. I am working on diversifying my library but I'd also like to offer students a comfortable library area to peruse, choose, and read books. Sitting in a hard plastic chair at a desk all day is not comfortable. So, please consider helping my students develop a love of reading and increase their reading levels while in a pretty and comfortable classroom.
