My Students

My classroom is like my students' home-away-from-home. It is a place where I am fostering a love of learning with a sense of independence. My classroom is set up to be a place where my students can learn and feel as though they are somewhere safe.

Our school is the poorest and one of the most dangerous cities in the U.S.

School is typically the only safe haven these kids know. My students live in a city where the dynamics can change in the blink of an eye. Even though my students live in a city that has its ups and downs, they are always eager to come to school to learn and experience new and exciting things. The students in my class are all classified as "Autistic" and as one student said, "We are all autistic in our own ways." All the students in my building look out for my students and they will give them "high-5s" when they see them. I want to be able to provide my students with every experience that they will need to be successful in this world.

My Project

Time for Kids, Island of the Blue Dolphins, and Number the Stars will continue to enhance the print-rich classroom that I strive to create. My classroom is a place that my students can spread out to enjoy, reading their books for Language Arts! Every student book that is placed in my classroom is treated with love and care, and they are thankful for the opportunities to read. All of these books have been chosen with my students in mind. I have watched them the past few weeks of school grow into amazing young adults who are eager to learn and I have also asked them what type of books they would enjoy reading. Students will be able to choose books, which will help them continue to enjoy independent reading time.

With these new books, my students will be able to learn about how to handle bullying situations as well as learning about important concepts in history, which will allow them to read independently at their own grade level.

They will also be able to learn about important concepts from these books that will be of interest to them. The best way to increase reading ability is to read more, and these books will continue to help my students grow stronger in their reading abilities. My students already have shown an astonishing interest in reading new and interesting concepts, and this project will only help enrich their experiences with the printed word.
