Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I have been teaching third grade for the past five years in New York. My school is Title 1, however the students don't act like they live in low-income families/homes. They come to school with a passion to learn and it has been my job and pleasure to teach them over the past five years.

This proposal goes along with the theme of DonorsChoose. Just like Donors help students, Reading can help Writing. My students often struggle when it comes time for creating their own writing pieces. They struggle to understand what is expected of them or even how to start writing their memoir, or a realistic fiction. Students need to see/read models of how great writing looks. They need to read incredible authors like Tomie DePaola, Judy Blume, Patricia Polacco and many more. These authors have written incredible stories that show students how great writing should look. Students would be able to see how to write a "great beginning" or what is a "realistic" problem for their character to face. Students need books to guide them as a model in their writing.

If my students were able to receive about 30 books written by great authors to use as models, they would be able to succeed in writing. My students would be able to read these books and try to incorporate the authors style of writing into their own. These books would be used throughout the year with each writing piece my students create. Not only would my students have myself to model writing for them, but experienced exceptional writers as well.

Reading and writing are two subjects that go together like peanut butter and jelly. Sure you could eat a jelly sandwich or just a peanut butter sandwich, but that would be simple and plain. Together they make an incredible sandwich everyone loves. Same goes for reading and writing. Alone they can be taught but not to an exceptional level. Together they will empower my students to become great writers and even motivate them to read and write. And possibly one day in the future my students can become well known authors too.
