Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

In order to write well, students need access to quality models. My students are clamoring for engaging nonfiction, but I currently have little to offer them.

The Third Grade students in our class are all bilingual, while some are even trilingual.

Since Kindergarten, they have been learning to read and write in both English and Spanish. They are eager learners, motivated to read and acquire new knowledge through the books they read. Most of the books we have available to them in Spanish, though, are fiction.

My Project

My students need nonfiction texts in Spanish to support their conceptual understanding of Third Grade Science units that focusing on plant and animal habitats. Using these books as mentor text, will allow the children to develop fluency and familiarity with content vocabulary and the range of format found within nonfiction text, they need access to quality literature. The books selected list will engage children and support their learning in our Third Grade Science units. Additionally, these books will serve as models of high-quality nonfiction writing as students write their own expository pieces.

The mentor texts listed, as well as the work students will create based on these texts, will serve as resources to support students' learning for years to come.

Students will be able to transfer their learning to their developing English literacy as well as advanced studies in Science.
