My Students

Common Core standards have raised the bar by which we judge students' success. Imagine that you are new to this country and are just learning English, but still must meet these standards after only a year. My goal is to teach my students the skills they need to be successful as soon as possible.

Most of my ESL students are refugees whose families have moved to the United States with the hopes of safety, education, and better life for their children.

Our school is a public elementary/middle school where almost a quarter of the population are English language learners. They are happy, hard-working students, who are excited to learn.

My Project

My students come in to 5th grade with a love of reading, which I nurture and encourage. This year, my goal is to make them better readers--critical readers--and to teach them to express what they learn through writing. They need dictionaries so that they can build their vocabulary! They need thesauruses to make their writing more colorful. They need news magazines to build their interest in informational reading on a variety of topics, and to provide topics about which they can write. Students will keep their work in binders (which is why we need the bookcase), so that we can see the progress they make throughout the year.

Supporting this project will make a huge difference for my students.

This is my third year teaching 5th grade ESL, and so my resources have been limited. We work with Internet resources as much as possible as a way to get around the limited resources in my classroom, but having thesauruses at students' tables and magazines they they can each hold, and mark up and refer to at any time, will be a great help. With your help, my students will become great critical readers and writers!
