This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach English language learners in a high poverty public elementary school. My students are a group of intelligent third and fourth grade English language learners with a desire to learn. Additionally, my students face a big challenge in school given that they are expected to perform at the level of their English-speaking peers, even though they are learning a new language in addition to content material. Despite the challenges of a language barrier and tough living conditions, my students like all children, love to learn and they love using technology. Often, the only exposure that they get to a computer is in school and therefore every opportunity they have is exciting and immediately engages them in learning.

My Project

My ELL students are reading below grade level expectations even with interventions in place. The Evan-Moor skills books and center activities will allow me to provide them developmentally appropriate instruction in my intervention groups. This reduces frustration and increases success! It also improves comprehension which is the ultimate goal. When commonly used words are mastered the students will be able to increase their reading levels. I will teach them to use the pictures and letter/sound connections to figure out unknown words. It is my goal to have ELL students reading on grade level by the time they leave our elementary school. My students also struggle with word problems, so I have requested some daily word problem books at lower levels so they can have success at their reading level. Lastly, my students struggle with re-grouping when adding and subtracting multi-digit numbers. That is why I am requesting money manipulatives of varying place values (pennies are hundredths, dollars are ones, 100 dollars are hundreds, etc.) for solving addition and subtraction problems with re-grouping.

ELL students are unfamiliar with many topics in reading books.

I will use these books in small groups so I can give these students instruction specifically for them. This will create self-confidence, improve reading, and create a love of reading!
