This is the first year I have taught third graders. I have learned they are very special souls! I am also coming to understand the needs that this generation, specifically students who have experienced the challenges of COVID, have.
These children are special because they have grit.
They love to be successful and they are learning how to be in the classroom full time again. Many of them have fallen behind academically and need to work hard every day to learn their grade level content. I admire some of their work ethic and their ability to identify where they are and set goals to improve. They have been through so much stress and change - they are resilient.
My Project
I chose to use this opportunity to start a themed monthly read-aloud with my students. The themed picture books will be read throughout the month combined with other books I currently have. The series that I added to my list are to help foster a love of reading for some of my more reluctant readers. These are popular series that they cannot get enough of and I do not personally have enough of in our classroom library.
I want the opportunity to laugh and connect with my students through interesting, beautiful picture books.
They seemed to have, on various levels, lost a love for reading. My hope is, they will connect with these chosen books and we will connect together as a class.
