Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students in my classroom have not had the opportunity to build background knowledge in various topics across the curriculum because they do not have access to a variety of literature that relates to what thy are learning in class.

My students love to read and they really like when they are able to relate what they are reading to what they have learned in the past.

Most of my students are English Language Learners who need more exposure to material that is at their level and that they can understand. We live in Nevada and many of the families in our neighborhood are forced to move around a lot;as a result the children are not given a chance to really learn from their environment and build a good library in their home that can help them with school and understanding difficult concepts.

My Project

With the math books I am asking for I can make math lessons come to life with literature they can understand and can help them understand difficult math concepts. With the literature books and units the students will be able to partake in engaging reading activities that will help them focus their ideas and ask themselves the appropriate questions that will help them to understand what they are reading.

The biggest impact of these books will be that they will foster a love or reading in children who otherwise are not exposed to literature.

Students who love reading and develop the necessary strategies to read multiple levels of books are more likely to graduate high school and move on to college. With a low percentage of Nevadans attending college I believe that we need to do everything that we can to help motivate children and help them succeed.
