My Students

"Confidence, like art, is not about having all the answers; it comes from being open to all the questions." -Earl Gray Stevens This beautiful quote summarizes what I ultimately want for my students. I want them to be open, not fearful. Reading about and participating in ART can be an outlet.

My students come from many neighborhoods of the city, from very diverse backgrounds, ethnically and economically.

They are great teachers to each other, helping each other, empathizing with each other, creating art with each other. It isn't always easy, but working through struggles together makes us stronger. Over 50% of our students are on free or reduced lunch. Approximately 15% of our population are students with special needs, either physically or cognitively. In my art class, when a student seems to grasp a concept well, and I need assistants, I put them to work. Then, they start to naturally help each other without me asking. It is beautiful to witness! We have amazing kids at our school!

My Project

In my art class, students are required to read for 7 minutes at the beginning of every class. They select an art magazine or art book from my class library which exposes them to artists, techniques, and art movements. Even though it is such a short reading time, I ask afterward if anyone would like to share. It is amazing how many kids' hands shoot up after discovering something new they want to share with others. I facilitate a little discussion and we continue our routine consisting of art history, a demonstration, and art making. The books I am requesting will serve their curiosities and promote joyful, exciting reading with lots of great information about art.

Helping me purchase quality books for my class library will promote joyful reading, but also encourage students to speak and share thoughts with classmates.

As you may know, students love having opinions and opinions backed by good resources makes them more knowledgeable about the world in which we live. The art books selected are all age appropriate for students in the middle years. Often, they also promote learning within their core subjects, as well.
