Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As a teacher of English Language Learners, many of whom are newcomers to this country, it is imperative that I build language and literacy skills while at the same time teaching scientific content and fostering inquiry.

I teach approximately 90 ELL students in bilingual Biology and Chemistry classes in one of the largest high schools in Connecticut, which is also in a high poverty area.

There are over 40 different languages spoken in our extremely diverse school and all students are required to pass Biology and Chemistry to graduate. Students are very eager to learn science and to improve their academic and communicative language skills, and they come to class excited to experiment and investigate. I teach using a combination of visuals, models, hands-on materials, project-based learning, and my own materials that I have adapted to make them more accessible to my students.

My Project

Science textbooks are heavily loaded with difficult vocabulary words and complex concepts that are difficult for students to understand, especially our English Language Learners. Encouraging students to read and write about scientific topics helps them to understand information presented in class. Once high-interest texts with colorful visuals and the appropriate reading level are made available like these subscriptions to Science World magazine, students are more likely to be self-motivated to read because they want to discover more about the topics that interest them. Reading will help our ELLs to enhance their literacy skills, further their scientific knowledge, and impact their success in meeting our district-wide goals of increasing student proficiency in developing evidence-based argumentative writing.

My goal is to build a classroom library with one classroom set of Science World magazines for our English Language Learners.

Key words and concepts are highlighted to guide reading of information text and correlate with standards. Along with a subscription comes an access code for additional digital materials, including videos and skills worksheets. Students will use these materials in class but will also be able to sign them out to enjoy reading at home.
