I teach a First/Second Grade Special Education bridge class in New York. The school is considered to be one of high poverty level. In a self-contained classroom, the students spend the entirety of their day with me as their teacher.

As a first year teacher and Teaching Fellow, I walked into a bare classroom with few supplies of my own. Not knowing where to start with all of the resources I needed, I had to "beg, borrow, and steal" to provide my students with the books we currently have. The students love getting to choose books that interest them! However, the only way to accomplish this is to provide a wide variety of books for their use. It has been very difficult to get a lot of necessary resources due to budget restrictions in the school system. Books are a hot commodity! Especially those on the Fountas & Pinnell levels A-K! With so many children having difficulty reading through the 5th grade, those lower level books which should be reserved for PreK-2nd grade are spread all around the school. We have been left with very few books in our First/Second Special Education classroom.

We are in great need of a leveled classroom library! I spend time each weekend searching yard sales and Craig's List for cheap and appropriate books for my students, but it can be very difficult to find quality resources. These amazing leveled book boxes would allow me to provide my students with the best education. They would be the tool through which I would teach my students the love of reading. The Fountas & Pinnell levels A-K would suit my emergent readers' needs. As a self-contained Special Education class, a large proportion of my students have speech and language impairments which have a huge impact on their reading skills. Quite a few of my students are what we call "Pre-A." They are NOT even able to be scored according to most reading assessments. This is why it is so important that we secure starting level books for our classroom!

Your support will ensure that my students have the books they need to learn good reading strategies, make authentic connections to text, and develop a life-long love of reading!
