Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

In our inclusion classroom we have 32 students per ELA period. New this year to our school is departmentalization, in which my co-teacher and I teach BOTH third grade classes ELA. Our students live in a low-income area of the South Bronx. Many of them are not exposed to literature outside of the classroom, whether it be books, newspapers or even websites. In order for our students to grow as literary readers, it is important that they also become aware of the events happening around them. We hope that making them aware of current events will help empower them in the future to become great citizens.

My Project

In third grade, students begin to read longer and meatier passages. These passages cover many genres and often have some vocabulary that is new to students. Throughout the year, students learn different strategies and skills to tackle new words, and genres to improve their comprehension of these different genres.

There are a range of abilities within our classes, and many students benefit from different scaffolds to find success in the classroom.

In order to provide these students with the means necessary, it would beneficial to our classroom that there is a color printer readily accessible.

In addition, many students have been working on computers while conducting research projects, and would enjoy printing our what they found right away! Allowing the students to highlight information they have found on the computer, and print it right away, would increase their excitement to learn and research.
