My Students

My students attend a Title I school in a high needs area where they receive free breakfast and lunch each day. Many of these students live in poverty. My 4th and 5th grade class consists of twelve students with disabilities who are also English language learners. They come from families that do not speak English and have little to no help at home. Everything they learn, they learn in school.

Fund this project and my students will have access to books at their independent reading level.

My Project

I am trying desperately to build a classroom library filled with books at my students independent reading levels. The students in my class need books on various levels to enjoy for independent reading. My classroom is currently filled with books above my students levels. All they can do is stare at the shelves and wish they could read those books. Everyone starts somewhere, and this is true of readers as well. When students are given books at their independent level and see that they can be successful on their own, it does wonders for their self esteem. It also opens up a whole new world for them. When students become better readers, they become better writers, and expand their vocabularies. Students need to be able to read in all subject areas; students read math word problems, read directions, read for information in content areas to name a few of these areas. When students read they develop their language skills, enhance their concentration, and develop empathy.
