Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach 47 third grade students at a high poverty, inner city elementary school in Richmond, Virginia. Of those students, several have disabilities that impact their performance in school, both academically and behaviorally. At home, many of my students do not have access to any books or the ability to travel to the local library. Often, the books my students read in my classroom are the only books they read all day. My students range as readers from reading at the kindergarten level to a fifth grade reading level.

My Project

My students need 11 sets of leveled texts to help them grow as readers. My students need a variety of texts at their individual reading level to help them grow as readers. Each year, students are assessed and given an instructional reading level. While 3rd grade students should be reading at a specific level, many students are reading far below grade level and some are exceeding expectations.

This leveled library will allow me to work with smaller groups of students that are reading on the same level, and focus on specific skills and strategies that they may need extra support with practicing.

Because each level has several texts, students will be able to practice these reading skills across several high interest books.
