Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

At some point in our lives we all get hooked on books and we even skip dinner or read past our bed time because we can't put that book down. My students have yet to find that book that's so intriguing to them. I am determined to help them find it.

My students live in a very rough neighborhood.

About 35% of my students live in shelters and the other 63% of my students live with ten other people in a one bedroom apartment. Of course I can count in one hand those students that live in what may be the "ideal" home. California has many children eager to learn, but circumstances forbid them from doing so. At our school, we are doing everything in our power to end these cycles. Our students must know that being Latinos or African Americans is just an ethnicity. It means nothing. We teach our students to strive, to always reach for the stars. To see what is around them and decide what will their future look like when the time comes. Will their future have the same surroundings or how and why will it be different? Will they be able to come back into a community in which they grew up in and help change it? Teachers here at this school want to help!

My Project

I love to read stories and discuss them with my students. But with all the educational demands, I am finding less and less time to be able to read to them. I am hoping that with the audio libraries, my students can still have story time. I would also love to introduce literature circles with these books. Being that most of my students are at different reading levels, I would hate for this to stop students from being able to discuss stories and complete fun projects and activities. I have also found that children dive into stories that are read with expression and feeling. Aside from the fact that this is a very important standard and skill to learn what better way to learn than by example.

I hope students learn to become readers.

I want students to see the importance in reading. As an educator, I will do my part in teaching them the skills to be able to access a book. The audio books will do their part in teaching children that stories are fun and we can learn a lot from reading and listening to stories.
