This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a special education teacher in the Bronx. I am currently the teacher for Academic Intervention Services for grades kindergarten through second grade. I help students who are struggling to keep up in the classroom due to a lack of important reading skills. My job is to provide small group instruction for these children every day to give them the strategies they need in order to become better readers. Reading is one of the most important skills a child needs in order to be successful and I want to be able to provide my students with the best reading instruction so that they cannot only improve their reading skills but also develop a love for reading in their every day lives.

My Project

These reading tools will be used every day in our small groups in order to help students practice their sight word recognition, develop their reading fluency, and lastly practice their word building skills.

Not only will these tools help them to do these things every day but it will make practicing these skills more engaging for the struggling readers.

The microphones and sound phones provide a fun way for students to hear themselves read and work on their reading fluency. I plan to use the microhpone together with the reading fluency cards together so that students can work in partnerships on fluency building in a more engaging way. to read more clearly hearing themselves read helps them and with more expressions. fluent readers can comprehend texts better. The sight word bundles will provide students with a way of studying their sight words indepednently within the contexts of actual books. The easel will make small group instruction possible because the smaller easel will be more at eye level allowing students to sit around the table and see the whole group instruction clearly. I have included fluency Bingo as a part of my supplies list in order to implement fun fridays in my reading room, where students will practice the skills they have been working on during the week, but in the context of games. These tools will make reading instruction accessible, engaging, and fun.
