My Students

I teach the only fifth-grade class on the entire island of Wrangell. This year I am teaching 25 amazing students! My students love to learn about the world around them and share about our place, Wrangell, when we collaborate with other classes on Skype. Every year I try to add more place-based lessons in science and social studies so that we can learn even more about our community, island, and state and share it with other classes around the world! Through reading good books, my students develop empathy and learn more about current world issues.

My Project

In order to provide my students with more access to good books I have been updating my classroom library the past year by buying used and new books. I have a few more books that I would LOVE to add to the classroom library. The school library does not own any of the titles that I have added on this list.

When I add new books to my classroom library, students become extremely excited to them, and this excitement spreads like wildfire around the classroom.

Students are more likely to read books recommended by their friends. Every student has the opportunity to choose their own book to read independently every day. We have daily book chats as a class to discuss what students are reading.
