My Students

Holding a real book, especially a new book in your hands can change the way you see the world. My students have not been able to hold a real novel in their hands to read in their hands while we read it in class.

My students are energetic, enthusiastic children who need to be challenged and engaged in the learning process.

They all come from low income households so they have not been able to experience many of the things that their wealthier peers have. They attend a school where learning is put at the forefront, and we believe that every child has the ability to be successful, both in the classroom and in life. However, due to budget, many of the supplies, such as a classroom novel set, are not made available to my eager learners.

My Project

Previously when we have read novels in class, I have photocopied the book that I purchased. This has inhibited the children from fully experiencing the joy of reading by turning the actual pages of the book. I can remember holding brand new books in my hand when I was younger, delicately turning the pages, mesmerized by the mass of words. If my students are able to hold the powerful Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry, they will be able to be fully engaged as we are reading the text and not worry about the staple falling out of their photocopied book. It will allow us to easily refer back to passages and use them to influence our writing activities.

My students will hold actual novels in their hands and embrace books and the magic that is locked inside each one.
