My Students

My third-grade students go to a wonderfully diverse and collaborative public school in Brooklyn, New York. Our school works hard to help our students become problem solvers, creative thinkers, and socially responsible citizens of their community and the world.

My students are avid readers of chapter books who love reading stories about interesting and relatable characters!

However, my students are upset about the lack of diverse characters in the books we have in our classroom library. They would like to read books from the perspectives of many different characters!

My Project

Children find role models not only in their parents and teachers growing up, but also in the characters in their favorite books. These role models are incredibly important in helping children learn and grow into strong and confident young people.

Reading books with characters from diverse backgrounds is key to helping children understand perspectives that differ from their own and therefore developing empathy.

Not only do diverse characters teach all kids about being compassionate and inclusive, but they also help my students from all races and backgrounds feel confident in themselves. Having more books with diverse characters will be beneficial to the social and emotional development of ALL my students and I am excited to get them into their hot little hands!
