This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students live in a high poverty area and are rarely exposed to current news. Half of my students' parents do not speak or read English; and some cannot read at all. Most of my students lack skills that will make them successful citizens in the near future.

Eighty-five percent of our students are on free or reduced lunch; for some of them, the only meals they get are during school hours.

But despite these difficulties, they are considered scholars! They are hungry to learn and surpass their parents' difficulties. I need to provide them with extra help to teach them vocabulary in a way that is appealing to even the most reluctant reader.

My Project

By receiving these Weekly Readers, the students are EAGER to read them! These readers are so engaging they cannot put them down! Even students who just learned to speak English are reading them. This is a very powerful tool to help them improve on their reading. In addition, they stay current on events that are affecting our nation today. Because they are so excited about them, they end up taking these weekly readers home and sharing the information with their families. In class, the scholars will be reading them, summarizing them, writing stories and articles about them, and use them for our reading themes. They will read them every week as part of my reading program in order to help me incorporate Math, Science, and Social Studies into Reading. For my students, these weekly readers are also exciting because they are written by students just like them; they give them hope for their future.

These Weekly Readers take learning out of my classroom and into the real world.

My scholars realize that Reading, Math, Science, and Social Studies are everywhere in this world, not just at school. Please help make real scholars our of my students!
