My Students

I teach in a Philadelphia public school situated in the heart of the city. Our school serves about 600 neighborhood children from kindergarten through fourth grade. This is a Title I school wherein all of our children qualify for free breakfast and lunch. Our children enter kindergarten at a variety of levels. Every day, the students bring with them the challenges they face in their lives.

It is our mission to keep school a safe, productive and appealing place filled with engaging literature that serves to enlarge each child's view of the world around them.

My Project

A set of independent level books, comfortable seating, and a listening center in conjunction with tactile items will serve those weaknesses that are present in my struggling readers. I'm requesting leveled book sets, including read-alongs, fairy tales, empathy-building titles and sight word games. The Comfy Corner Listening Center will provide cozy reading spot for my students.

It's an oft-repeated fact that it is in first grade that students define themselves as weak or strong readers.

I want every one of my children to leave having built an array of skills in the areas of decoding and story sense. Learning to read is not a linear process. My materials are minimal or non-existent in those areas and I need help to help my children succeed.

As they get older, comprehension relies on prior knowledge that requires exposure to fairy tales, fiction, and non-fiction. Here and now is the time to support them in that way.

Many of my children do not have books in their homes and an appealing set along with strengthened decoding and segmenting skills will be the bridge to proficiency that is needed to certify each child, for themselves, as strong readers.
