My Students

My students are creative, thoughtful and full of questions! They absolutely love hands-on, active, engaging projects and challenges that allow them to think outside the box to find solutions! They come to school each day ready to try new things and take brave chances in order to grow both personally and academically. Truly, they are my inspiration!

Many of my students are struggling with our new language arts program, that doesn't allow enough opportunities to practice reading comprehension skills.

My students would benefit from additional resources to apply these skills.

Our school is located in Torrance, California. We are a Title I school, with over 85% of our student population receiving free or reduced lunch.

My students are thirsty for new knowledge and continue to sharpen their academic skills daily. We incorporate a variety of learning strategies, group work, and alternative seating and learning options to ensure that each student's needs are met, right where they are! They are truly an incredible group, and I am so lucky and thankful to have a new group of learners that are excited and ready to learn.

My Project

The use of scholastic readers is almost a daily activity in my classroom, especially during small groups. Using the reading comprehension skills, students will work in small groups to identify weekly comprehension strategies, as well as identify elements of certain genres.

With Scholastic News, students will work in small groups to practice fluency, practice comprehension strategies, and apply reading foundational skills.

By having individual scholastic readers, students will be able to apply and identify comprehension skills on a consumable reading piece. Students will also be given an opportunity to practice their speaking/listening skills when sharing out ideas. For those students who struggle, this will give them an opportunity to hear their classmates thinking and eventually apply these skills on their own.
