My Project

In a learning environment where access to diverse and engaging reading materials is limited, the impact of students personally selecting their books extends far beyond the pages. When asked, "How many times in the past month did you visit the public library for the purpose of getting books?" 62% of students answered that they did so zero times. This fact, paired with the reality that our school has a restricted number of books for students to enjoy, hinders each student's exposure to literature that truly speaks to them.

Empowering students to hand-pick their reading materials not only cultivates a sense of ownership over their learning journey but also fosters a genuine enthusiasm for reading.

These books will help the community of our school become more interested in reading. Since these books were chosen by students through a survey the students will be more motivated to read the materials and share with other students when we do our school wide activity of book buddies, when they read to/ with other grade levels. The opportunity to choose books that resonate with their interests, experiences, and aspirations transforms the act of reading into a personalized and meaningful experience.

Additionally, there is a minimal number of graphic novels available among the books of the students throughout the entire school. This initiative is not just about expanding their literary horizons throughout the 8th grade; it's about instilling in all students the belief that their voices matter and their education is a pathway to self-discovery and empowerment. The conversations that were brought up after the survey made the students interested in reading. Having the materials will allow our community within the classroom to expand knowledge and inspire curiosity about reading and English.
