My Students

In our classroom we don't do easy, we make the easy happen through hard work and learning!

My inquisitive third grade kiddos have been working hard all year to become active readers and writers!

They are hardworking students yearning to explore the world of reading and writing in concrete, fun, and engaging ways! They come from many different cultural and economic backgrounds. Even though my students face many challenges outside the walls of our classroom, they come to school excited to learn each day. We work as a TEAM to achieve goals and learn from each other, as well as published authors.

My kiddos love to read and learn from books. They take pride in their reading and writing accomplishments and know that if they stay focused and work hard, they can achieve anything! We have worked hard to understand that readers are writers, and writers are readers! They are eager to expand both their reading and writing strategies through exploration of rich picture books!

My Project

Mentor texts are an invaluable teaching and learning tool.

By studying a mentor text, a young writer can learn about how to "hook" their reader, how to use punctuation, how to structure a text, or any one of thousands of ways that writers choose to craft their writing.

My young writers will examine, comb through, and review these books for all different purposes. These books will challenge them, encourage them to take risks, and push them to try new writing strategies. Reading the mentor texts will lead the kiddos to reflection and steer them towards connections with their own lives. We will read mentor texts with creative fictional setting and characters, with science and math based themes, as well as history, and real people. The texts are guides for words and ideas, so that when my young authors are writing, they can express their own words and ideas with meaning and clarity.

Using Mentor texts allows students to see good writing in action! They also showcase the important connection between writing and reading. Students are able to understand how readers comprehend writing, what makes writing more engaging, and how to satisfy readers by reading good writing themselves!
