My Project

COVID-19 impacted each and every one of us. It was a huge adjustment for students, teachers, and families. As a teacher, I have seen the direct impact the pandemic has had on my students. This impact was academic, social, and financial. I have witnessed a significant drop in students' interest in reading. My hope with this project is to create a life, long love for not only education, but reading. Surprisingly, many of my 6th grade students have seen the new movie, Oppenheimer. Due to this movie, there has been interest and curiosity surrounding WWII, Pearl Harbor, internment camps and the atomic bomb. The classroom book set about Hiroshima and Anne Frank will foster this curiosity and restore their enjoyment of reading. I have also requested books on the Aztecs, Mayas, and Incas. Colorado State Standards for 6th grade Social Studies include these ancient civilizations.

In addition to the achievement gap in reading, many families experienced a financial burden as well.

This impact has trickled into the classroom, leading to multiple student school supply requests being unfulfilled by families. The remaining resources are meant to help support student learning and lessen the monetary burden on families. We use headphones for testing and in class assignments, binders to organize students' assignments, book bins to gather student belongings, and easel pads to create anchor charts. The wiggle seats will help support student movement and any restlessness they may be experiencing.
